Many people mistake electric bikes as scooters or motorcycles, but they aren’t. Basically, they are just bikes with additional parts, like a motor, battery, and controller. The “electric” part in an electric bike is never meant to give birth to a new era of bicycles – rather, it is there to augment the functionality of this beloved means of transportation, making it a slightly better version of itself, but retaining the very essence of what makes it a “bike”.

For normal, non-professional bike riders, tackling difficult terrain is a challenge. The addition of a motor to the pedals is meant to aid them to overcome ascents, jumps, and even sharp turns. It also helps riders travel farther with much less effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do electric bikes work?

There are three types of motors named according to where they are located on the bike: front hub motors, rear hub motors, and mid-drive motors.

Front hub motors

Hub motors are popular. They can be attached in either the front or rear wheel. In the case of front hub motors, the motion produced is a pulling motion; that is, momentum is yielded when the front hub motor spins the front tire.

PROSCONS
Mimics an all-wheel-drive system (ideal for snowy or muddy tracks)“Pulling” motion may feel uncomfortable to some
Easy installationMay get stuck during extreme climbs
Little maintenance requiredVery dependent on the size and durability of fork, spokes, and rims

Rear hub motors

On the contrary, rear hub motors, which are housed in the rear wheel, produce a motion that makes the rider feel like he or she is being pushed forward. This type of motion feels more natural. The rear end of the bike has better structural support, so can handle higher torques from the rotation power by the motor.
PROS CONS
Feels more comfortable May be difficult to install
A wider range of power options May get stuck during extreme climbs
Can use a throttle or torque sensor pedal assist for a more natural feel when shifting gears Very dependent on the size and durability of fork, spokes, and rims
Little maintenance required

Mid Drive Motors

Of the three types of motors, the mid drive motor feels most natural to riders because the power is delivered directly to the drivetrain instead of to a hub. After all, the drivetrain is the part that transfers power from the rider to the wheels.

As implied in the name, it is attached to the middle section of the bike.

PROSCONS
Can leverage both the lower and higher gears without getting stuck during extreme climbsPersistent use of the bike may damage the components of the drivetrain
Location on the bike makes for good weight distributionMid-drive kits are less available for other frames that do not fit the specific size
Can use a throttle or torque sensor pedal assist for a more natural feel when shifting gears

What are the different types of electric bikes?

Before setting out to buy an e electric bike, it is best to be informed of the different types first. This way, you can match the type to your lifestyle.

Commuter e-bikes for getting from point A to point B in your daily routine in the city. Sporty commuter e-bikes that exceed the standard 20 mph limit are also available.

Cargo e-bikes have a special accessory fitted unto the rear of the bike to carry your stuff, maybe even people!

Mountain and touring bikes also come in an e-bike version. This is perfect for riders who normally have difficulty climbing hills and making it past their hundred-mile destination points.

Folding e-bikes are designed to make transporting bikes easier. You can keep it inside your car without any trouble, and it is infinitely easier to take it on a flight or on a boat.

How long do the batteries last?

There are many types of batteries available in the market. The lithium (Li)-based batteries account for a large chunk of the batteries in the market today because of their large capacities and relative environmental compatibility. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are the most common type despite being expensive and hard to match with some electrical components.

On the average, these batteries can last for 20 to 25 miles. The best way to maintain your batteries, like all batteries, is to simply keep it topped up. Don’t let the power drain, lest you lose a cycle.

Batteries may pose the risk of overheating and, consequently, fires. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Samsung have been reported in early 2017 to have fabricated a lithium battery with a solid electrolyte. This was a collaborative effort to produce a battery that would potentially have almost an “unlimited” number of cycles (lasting in the hundred-thousand range) without degrading. You can look forward to having this technology in the near future!

Deep cycle batteries like the batteries used in e-bikes are rated using the Ah system. The amp hour (Ah) is an important battery rating that you might find in many product descriptions. It gives the amount of current that a battery can discharge for a certain period of time. The higher the Ah rating, the more power you can get from the battery during discharge.

Happy biking!
